Science Judges Needed on December 4th, 2021

21 Oct 2021

The John Jay Science & Engineering Academy (SEA) and Young Women’s Leadership Academy need volunteers for science judges.

Both events will be on the same day (December 4, 2021) and at the same time.  John Jay Science & Engineering Academy (SEA) will hold their fair in-person, and the Young Women’s Leadership Academy (YWLA) will be a virtual event.

John Jay Science & Engineering Academy (SEA)

The John Jay Science & Engineering Academy is hosting its annual Science and Engineering Research Fair and Symposium on Saturday, December 4th, 2021, from 8:30 am-1:00 pm and we are seeking volunteers to serve as judges for the fair.

Projects include the STEM areas of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, Math and Computers, as well as projects in the Social Sciences such as Psychology and Sociology. Project levels span beginner (freshmen) to advanced (upperclassmen). Because of this wide spectrum of topics and levels, we need a variety of volunteers with different experiences and levels of training/interest.

Over 200 judges are required to provide feedback to our students. Our school fair is one of the largest of its kind in the state of Texas and the nation and includes nearly 500 students presenting their scientific research. Students who do well will be given the opportunity to advance to the Junior Academy of Science Competition, to be held virtually this year, and to the Alamo Regional Science Fair at St. Mary’s University. Advancing students will then go on to participate at the state and national level. Each year, the research team competes to earn scholarships, cash prizes and special awards provided by universities, the military, businesses, research institutions, and private organizations.

Judges are asked to arrive at 8:30am for a light breakfast, brief welcome, and folder pick-up that will include scoring rubrics, suggested questions, and the categories that they will be judging. Lunch will be served from 11:30pm-1:30pm in the library. A certificate of participation will also be included in the judge’s folder, noting the number of volunteer hours.

Health Notice: During the Science & Engineering Research Fair, we will follow health and safety guidelines as issued by Northside ISD, including the use of face masks, providing hand sanitizer, access to cleaning wipes, etc. Updates will be communicated closer to the date of the fair.

Conflict of interest? If you would like to be a judge and are the parent of an SEA student or are mentoring a student who is participating in the fair, please indicate in the comments section of the registration form which grade and category the student is competing in, so we can assign you to a different category.

If you would like to be a judge, please fill out the following google form:

Thank you for your time and consideration. Your support at this event will make a positive difference in the life of a young adult and support STEM education.

Young Women’s Leadership Academy

The Young Women’s Leadership Academy is requesting volunteers to help judge this year’s virtual YWLA Science Fair scheduled for Saturday, December 4, at 9 a.m. to noon (Central).  Be a judge for students projects online through this virtual Science Fair via Zoom, which allows middle and high school students the opportunity to showcase their hard work, dedication to STEM and creative science experiments!

Anyone interested in this community outreach event should email Shannon Dellenback at shannon.dellenback@swri.org or Andrea Morantes at andrea.morantes@swri.org for more information. We appreciate your time and consideration on this important day for our future scientists.
