San Antonio, once considered a city suffering from “brain drain” of students taking jobs elsewhere, has become an attractive city for college graduates to start their career, according to onlinedegrees.com.

The website has ranked San Antonio No. 5 among the largest U.S. cities for best cities for graduates.

Factors include percentages of other young adults, rent, earnings and job growth prospects in Texas.

“San Antonio is the second-most affordable city on the list in terms of cost of living and has the third-lowest unemployment rate,” Onlinedegrees.com states.

Those are especially strong factors when college graduates start their careers with student debt.

San Antonio is a top area “for savvy young adults looking to get the best return on their educational investment.”

“Couple that with high statewide job-growth projections, and you can see why the city is an excellent choice for recent grads,” the website report adds. “San Antonio’s economy is focused largely on military, health care, oil and gas and tourism, thanks to the immense draw of the Alamo and other Spanish missions in the area.”

Young adults want to live around other young adults. Nearly 22 percent of San Antonio’s population is between 20 and 34. The median rent for all units available in the city in 2014 was $713 a month, according to the web site, and the median earnings for bachelor’s degree holders in 2014 was $50,279.

Jobs in Texas are expected to increase by 21.5 percent between 2012 and 2022, thus providing young adults with job-hopping opportunities. These numbers are the main reasons for San Antonio’s high ranking.
