Dr. José E. Cavazos, professor and assistant dean of the South Texas Medical Scientist Training Program (M.D./Ph.D.) at UT Health San Antonio was appointed on Sept. 16 as chair of the M.D./Ph.D. Section of the Graduate Research Education and Training Group (GREAT) of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).

This role leads M.D./Ph.D. directors and programs across the country, helping to shape training environments and determine top priorities as an organization. His top priority this year is increasing diversity and support systems for underrepresented students in M.D./Ph.D. programs and applicants.

“His dedication to students and the national organization is inspiring and we are lucky to have him directing the STX-MSTP,” said Jennifer Davila, program manager of the South Texas Medical Scientist Training Program. “We are lucky to have a director who is so committed to the field of M.D./Ph.D. work and distinguished as a national leader!!!”

Dr. Gregory Aune, associate professor at UT Health San Antonio, echoed this sentiment.

“Thanks to Dr. Cavazos for his dedication to not only our students, but also to broadly fostering the development of the next generation of physician scientists,” Dr. Aune said.
