UT Health San Antonio has received full accreditation from the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC) for the laboratory animal care and use program, announced Andrea Giuffrida, Ph.D., vice president for research.

The three-year accreditation “is recognized around the world as a symbol of high quality animal care and use for research, teaching and testing, and demonstrates the institution’s full compliance with local, state and federal laws that regulate animal research,” Dr. Giuffrida said.

He added that the AAALAC site visitors were impressed by facility renovations, the development of an investment plan, the staff engagement, protocol post-approval monitoring, team approach in veterinary care and animal facility records for veterinary care and sanitation.

Dr. Giuffrida expressed thanks to Sander Hacker, D.V.M., and Mark Nijland, Ph.D., for their leadership in coordinating the accreditation process.
