Mika Sifuentes Awarded Grant From American Heart Association

01 Jan 2016
anthonyc

Congratulations to Mika Sifuentes for receiving a predoctoral fellowship from the American Heart Association.

Mika is a Neuroscience student working in the lab of Dr. Jim Lechleiter.

Her research focuses on the underlying mechanisms of thyroid hormone enhanced neuroprotection after acute brain injuries.

She is interested in examining the role of fatty acid oxidation (FAO) in this process.

In particular, how stimulation of FAO by thyroid hormones may be mediated by complex formation of a mitochondria enzyme called the Trifunctional Protein.

She is currently developing a new optical microscopy approach, super-resolution, to directly study this process in vivo.

Way to go, Mika!
