GSBS staff voluntered at the San Antonio Food Bank on Saturday, August 5. The volunteering project was led by Marcus Webster, academic program coordinator for the Biomedical Engineering program.

“I wanted to volunteer at the food bank to help out those who need assistance and have a positive experience with coworkers outside of the workplace,” he said. “It was quite enjoyable spending time at the SA Food Bank with the GSBS Office. My favorite memory was playing Tetris with the boxes or seeing coworkers dance to the music as we worked together.”

According to the San Antonio Food Bank’s website, the food bank serves around 58,000 individuals a week to 16 counties in Southwest Texas. While at the event, the GSBS team was joined by several other volunteer groups and together we ended up completing 1200 boxes and 25 palettes.

“It was an eye opening experience. I didn’t realize that the food bank was such a large operation and that so many people were in need of assistance,” said Kay Eskew, program coordinator for the Integrated Biomedical Sciences program.

Giovanna D’Ambra, program coordinator at the graduate school, said that it was her first time volunteering at the food bank.

“I have made monetary donations before, however, being engaged in the activity felt much more meaningful,” she said. “The GSBS office is a great group of people that care about the folks in our community. We wanted to do something different and I think we accomplished just that thanks to Marcus Webster who organized the event!”
