Heather Hambright Receives Armand J. Guarino Award for Excellence in Doctoral Studies
Congratulations to one of CSA’s recent graduates, Heather Hambright, PhD!!! Heather is the 2017 Armand J. Guarino Awardee for Excellence in Doctoral Studies! This is the third time in 5 years that the nominee of the CSB graduate program has been the recipient of the Guarino Ph.D. award with Diana Villarreal (Cancer Biology track) and Katie Lewis (Biology of Aging track) being selected in 2013 and 2015 respectively!
Heather, who was in the Cancer Biology track in Rita Ghosh’s lab, graduated with a Ph.D. degree in May 2017. She recently commenced the K00 phase of her 5-year NIH/NCI F99/K00 award as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
The Guarino Awards (Ph.D. and M.S.) are the highest awards the Graduate School bestows on its graduates and they were established in honor of a past Dean of the school to recognize exceptional performance (academics, leadership and service) by graduate students during their training here at UT Health San Antonio. Heather, our nominee for the PhD award this year was selected by the Graduate School’s Award Committee from a very competitive field of nominees put forward by various individual PhD programs across the institution.
Heather will receive recognition in form of a certificate and a $1,500 check from the Graduate Dean at the annual Convocation on Friday 18 August. She will also have her name added to the plaque listing past Guarino awardees that is on display in the Graduate Dean’s Office.
We are very proud of Heather and all her accomplishments and wish her well in her new position!
Congratulations also to Heather’s mentor, Dr. Rita Ghosh.
