Over the next two years, a seven-person team led by principal researcher Dr. Madesh Muniswamy will study the cause, prevention and treatment of multiple organ failure resulting from sepsis.

Each year, at least 1.7 million Americans are diagnosed with sepsis, an infection that spreads to a patient’s blood or tissues causing a high risk of organ failure and death, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported.
San Antonio Partnership for Precision Therapeutics, made up of the top four biomedical institutions in the city, is giving $200,000 to a team researching a condition that causes a third of all hospital deaths.

His work was highlighted in the San Antonio-Express-News article, “San Antonio researchers receive $200,000 grant to solve common cause of hospital death.”
