2017 Armand J. Guarino Awards for Academic Excellence
The Armand J. Guarino Awards for Academic Excellence were created in order to recognize exceptional performance of graduate students at both the Doctoral and Master’s levels during their training at UT Health San Antonio. In order to be eligible for the 2017 awards, nominees must meet the following criteria: 1) have been officially admitted to candidacy at either the Doctoral or Master’s degree level; in addition students, 2) have completed the requirements for and conferred their degree by August 2016, December 2016, February 2017, May 2017, or June 2017. A given student may be nominated more than once, but past recipients of the Guarino Award for a given degree program will not be eligible for a second Guarino Award.
Guarino Award applications should be submitted electronically to Dr. Nicquet Blake in the Graduate Dean’s Office (blaken@uthscsa.edu) no later than 5 pm on Tuesday, July 25, 2017 by each departmental/program Committee on Graduate Studies (COGS). Incomplete packets or those that do not follow the guidelines will NOT be reviewed.
Note: By agreeing to be nominated, the applicant waives his/her right to access any letters of recommendation written on their behalf.
Application packets must be submitted in PDF format in the following order:
Curriculum Vitae (without social security number)
Unofficial Graduate Transcript from the UTHSCSA
Letter of nomination from the COGS Chair; this letter should reference the achievements of the student that constitute the basis for the nomination
Letter of recommendation from the Advisor/Supervising Professor
Letters of recommendation from two other faculty from UT Health San Antonio
Letters of recommendation from one individual outside UT Health San Antonio faculty who is a scientist or other professional capable of commenting on “the perceived contribution of the nominee’s research work to the progress in the field”.
Reprints of up to three published papers.
Presentation of The Armand J. Guarino Awards at the Annual Convocation:
A check for $1500 and a Certificate will be presented to each Doctoral award recipient. A check for $1000 and a Certificate will be presented to each Master’s award recipient. These awards will be made at Convocation on August 18, 2017.
