Recent Cell Systems and Anatomy Master of Science student Laura Solis received the Armand J. Guarino Award for Excellence in Master’s Studies at this year’s convocation.

The Armand J. Guarino Awards for Academic Excellence were created in order to recognize exceptional performance of graduate students at both the Doctoral and Master’s levels during their training at UT Health San Antonio. In order to be eligible for the 2017 awards, nominees must meet the following criteria: 1) have been officially admitted to candidacy at either the Doctoral or Master’s degree level; in addition students, 2) have completed the requirements for and conferred their degree by August 2016, December 2016, February 2017, May 2017, or June 2017.

At the graduate school, Solis worked on a thesis project that created novel interactive teaching modules of the pelvis. She also led teaching modules to explain this model to first year medical students at UT Health San Antonio in addition to serving as a teaching assistant in the Language of Medicine module (gross anatomy & embryology).

She has presented her work at the Innovations Conference of the UT Academy of the Health Sciences Education, Anatomy Grand Rounds of the Departments of Surgery and Cell Systems & Anatomy, and the 2017 American Association of Clinical Anatomist meeting in Minneapolis, Minnesota. At the meeting, she won the Sandy C. Marks, Jr. Student Poster Presentation Award in the category of Education.

Her work has received numerous accolades. She recently received the Best Poster Award at the Cell Systems and Anatomy department retreat. She also received the 2017 Rennels Memorial Award for Excellence in Graduate Studies.

Solis has also participated in a number of outreach activities spanning the Science Expo to working with the Voelcker program students.
