UT Health San Antonio Family Day A Big Hit
UT Health San Antonio hosted its first Family Day, which featured food trucks, a petting zoo, a magic show, a balloon artist, music, interactive booths and more.
“Family Day was a chance for students, staff, faculty, alumni to bring their families on campus” said Charlotte Anthony, marketing specialist in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. “It was a great way to showcase our UT Health San Antonio pride.”
Anthony came up with the idea for Family Day at a recent graduation ceremony. “After talking with students, I realized it was the first time they had brought their parents and families to campus, and it was their last day here,” she said.
During the event, many departments, organizations and entities on campus brought fun activities to share. Some of the big highlights of the event included the firetruck, police car, and ambulance which allowed kids to see the inside of these vehicles.
“The booths had a lot of good information like the nursing school did a demonstration about sugar intake which was a great lesson for my kids,” said Eileen Kleffner, academic coordinator for the Department of Surgery. “Everyone working at the different tables were helpful, engaging and happy to be part of the event.”
Guiomar Garcia also from the Department of Surgery said it was “a wonderful opportunity for our UT Health employees to share the many resources of our campus with their families. It was fantastic to see so many employees enjoying the day with the kids and grandkids, having fun and learning. I hope this becomes an annual event for our families.”
The event was organized by an interprofessional committee that included Kirsten Lorenzen from the UT Health Libraries; Cynthia Adcock from the Office of the President; Jennifer Sandlin from the School of Dentistry; Lety Laurel from the Office of Marketing, Communications, and Media; Veronica Davis and Eileen Kleffner from the Department of Surgery; Irene Chapa from the Office of Recruitment and Science Outreach; Nancy Place from Creative Media Services, Mary DelCarmen Martinez from the Department of Pathology; Cindal Dominguez from the Staff Advisory Council; Charlotte Anthony, Yvonne Valdez and Kay Eskew from the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences; Alba Cook from the School of Health Professions and Ellyse Sanchez from the Office of Student Life.
The event was sponsored by Student Services Funding and the Special Events Council.
